Morphos

Morpho godarti godarti - Bolivia
Morpho hecuba - Brasil
Morpho polyphemus - Mexico
Morpho peleides insularis - Trinidad
The Genus Morpho is found only in the Neotropical Region and can be considered a "cult" species. They are highly prized for their metallic blue color which cannot truly be seen on a monitor. The scales of the metallic blue species are not blue at all but are structured so they act like an optical interference filter that absorbs all the colors except blue which they reflect. This produces the intense pure blue seen in some species. The blue also shifts towards violet when viewed at an angle so the wings appear different under varying lighting and viewing conditions. The Morphos are missing their abdomens because some species have an oily discharge that stains the wings after they die.
